When is National Pizza Day?
- On August 29, 2018
If you’re passionate about something, it’s important to celebrate it. While many of us practice our devotion to pizza wholeheartedly, the commemoration of an entire calendar day to pizza pie is only appropriate. Let’s look into how this glorious tradition was served up and how our lives are enriched by the deep dish of delight with some National Pizza Day facts!
On February 9, devout devourers of the ‘za can be found praying to their brick ovens or meditating in front of microwaves. While the origin of National Pizza Day is still a mystery, it is here to stay (no complaints here!) so preheat and repeat.
Ever since the first the opening of the first American pizzeria in 1895 with Lombardi’s in New York, we’ve been reaping the benefits. Before that, we can thank the ancient Romans for their invention of the pizza — though it was not the typical round pie we all know and love, it still had all the goods including sauce, cheese, and herb toppings. Hail Caesar!
The first pizzeria that crafted the iconic modern pizza, Antica Pizzeria, opened in Naples, Italy in 1738. Fast forward to 2002, and the Italians outdid themselves with the largest ever pizza in history. Such an impressive pie deserved its own name, and was dubbed the Octavius measuring over 20 meters in diameter! It was even made gluten-free — truly a pizza for all.
When we look at the pizza fan base, it’s apparent how it’s not going anywhere soon. Four billion pizzas are eaten every year in the U.S., and out of these one billion pizzas
are frozen pizzas. If you break it all down, that’s an average of 23 pounds of pizza a year for each person! Out of every restaurant in the US, 17% are pizzerias. How’s that for dedication?
